You can create a beautiful and productive vertical vegetable garden with nothing more than a few planks of wood, some wire, gardening staples such as potting soil, seeds, and good seedlings.
A vertical garden will give you exposure to the sun and speed up growth because the plants are closer to the sun. The plants will also be less prone to diseases because they’re not competing for soil nutrients or intruding on one another’s territory.
The vegetables will be easier to harvest since you won’t have to bend over to pick them, and they might even grow more quickly because they’re not competing for soil nutrients.
Vertical gardens can be used as a way to create more growing space in a very small area where it’s difficult to garden. They can also be used as decorative elements in your yard.

Building Your Garden Structure
The first step is to determine the size of your garden. Once you have a rough idea, mark the size on plywood or plastic. Next, cut the wood to make two pieces that are about 2 feet by 8 feet.
Use a pencil to mark the exact location where the piece of wood will be placed on your wall or fence.
Next, place your second piece of wood on top of the first plank and make two more marks that are about 1 foot and 2 feet from each corner. These marks will indicate where to place the screws that will hold the two pieces of wood together.
You’ll need about 12 or more screws for each 2 x 8 plank. Once you’ve screwed the two planks together, you can nail a piece of metal to the side to make the planks look more attractive and help them support your plants.

Building your Vertical Garden Boxes
The next step is to build your boxes. Start out by choosing a container that will fit between the two planks. You can use a large plastic storage tub, a short cardboard box, or other similar objects that have a top and bottom.
If your plan is to plant seeds inside the box you’ll need to drill some holes in the bottom of the box. After you’ve drilled the holes, use a hammer to punch two small holes in each side of the box for drainage.
You don’t want your plants sitting in water when they’re growing and you also want them as dry as possible because this will minimize rotting and disease.
Tie a piece of wire to the bottom of the box and then thread it through one of the holes. Use your pliers to twist the wire together. Repeat this process on all four sides of the box so that it’s securely fastened in place.
You can add tension to the wire by using a screwdriver with a flat head on each side. This will make it easier for you to attach a chain link fence if necessary.
Using your box as a planting container
Now that you have your wire secured, you can fill the box with potting soil. Plant your seeds or seedlings and water them well.
Place the box down on the plywood base where you’ve already drilled holes and reinforced the corners with screws.
You can add an additional screw under the bottom of each side to help secure it to the wood so it doesn’t tip when you water.
You can now start adding dirt and more soil to fill in around your plants. If you want to fill the box with more soil, cut out more pieces of wood and place them on top to use as supports for each corner. Secure these pieces of wood in place so that they’re not floating around.
Once you’ve filled the box full of soil, you can water it until it’s full. Next, cover the top with a layer of plastic or something else that will keep the soil moist but not completely saturated so that it doesn’t wash away when you water. If you’re using seedlings, you can place them in the box as you fill it with soil.

Using your box as a growing container
If you’re using your box to grow already planted vegetables or seedlings, fill it up with potting soil and water well. Place the box on top of the plywood base and secure it in place. Allow it to drain for a few days before you plant anything.
Finally, you can add a piece of chain link fence to the outside of your box. It will help to keep the vegetables further away from one another and make it easier for you to harvest.
Attach the chain-link fence to the top of your box and set it on a few bricks or concrete blocks so that the fence isn’t so close to the top of your plant when it’s growing.
Making a Hanging Garden
If you have enough space in your yard, you can build an entire garden suspended from a tree branch or above your house. You can also create a small enclosed area for your plants by building a box on the side of your house.
The best part is that you can add new plants when the old ones start to get scarce.
The only thing to watch out for is that you don’t accidentally leave some open space at the top, which will allow water and light in, ruining your plants.
Building Your Wall
The first thing you’ll need to do is build a wall for your garden. It needs to be tall enough that it will contain the dirt and plants. You can use a variety of objects, including old boards, sections of PVC pipe, concrete blocks, or metal sheets. You can also buy wooden planks that are already cut to size.
It’s best to seal whatever material you use so that it doesn’t get rotted by the water and other natural elements in your yard.
If you don’t have all the materials needed already, you can use some of the materials on hand to make a shallow trench to act as your wall. Line the trench with bricks and then set it on top of a thick layer of landscaping sand or gravel. You can also add more bricks to create an overflow area if necessary.
Use pieces of wood or PVC pipe to reinforce the top of your wall at its highest point so that it’s stable and doesn’t tip over when you water it.
You can either build your wall with the garden on the inside or the outside. If you’re planning to put the garden on the inside, you’ll need to line it with a weed barrier. This is a thin plastic sheet or netting that will keep grass and other unwanted plants away from your plants as they grow.
You can also use weed barrier if you’re planning to grow your plants on the outside of your wall, just in case.

Building a Water Reservoir
The next step is to get a large container to catch and hold water for your vertical garden. You can make your own water reservoir out of polycarbonate plastic sheets that are available at many home improvement stores or from online retailers. You can also place an old rubber tub or dishpan full of water within the garden itself.
Once you’ve finished your container, you’ll need to fill it with water. You can find out what the ideal distance is from the container to the plants, but most experts recommend about two feet.
The water reservoir should then be level and have a space of about 1 foot on all sides to allow for expansion of the soil for better drainage.
You’ll also need to create a structure that will hold up your garden at its highest point. This structure can be a wooden frame covered in wire mesh to support the garden, or you can use PVC pipes.
If you’ve chosen to build your vertical garden on the inside of your water reservoir container, then you need to fill that container with soil.
If you’re planning on building the garden on the outside of the reservoir, then add a layer of gravel at the bottom of the nutrient-rich soil and your plants should do well there as well.
You’ll need to add some sort of planting media, like Perlite or expanded shale, which will help provide air pockets for the roots of your plants to grow.
Next you’ll want to create a shelf or other structure that will hold your plants. You may think that cinder blocks are the perfect answer since they can be found almost anywhere and are cheap to buy.
However, they aren’t the best solution because they have a high pH level which isn’t good for the roots of most vegetables.
Wood is also out, because you don’t want your plants to touch wood since it has a tendency to rot and is difficult to replace if they don’t take.
Instead, build your shelving out of ¾ inch PVC piping. Using a sharp knife or a saw, cut the pipe 4 inches long and join the tubes at right angles, like pieces of an L.
Assemble all the pieces into an arch structure and fill it with soil that has been enriched with compost in order to provide a living environment for your plants.
How to Tend To Your Vertical Vegetable Garden
To take care of your vertical vegetable garden, you need to water it regularly. You will have to do this a few times per week at the very least. You can also check the moisture levels of your plants’ soil by using a moisture meter.
You should also remove weeds on a weekly basis. If they are left unattended for too long, they will turn into a problem later on. Use an herbicide to kill the weeds since you don’t want to disturb your plants.
Lastly, you’ll want to fertilize your plants with organic fertilizer to help them grow. You can apply the fertilizer by hand or with a sprayer.
How To Keep Your Vertical Vegetable Garden Safe From Animals
Your vegetables will not be safe from these animals if you don’t plan ahead. Here are some of the precautions to take:
Mice can make a mess of your vegetable garden when they are hungry or if they have babies to feed. The best way to keep them at bay is to use a cage or some other type of containment for them so that they’ll only come inside the cage and not destroy your vegetables as well.
Rabbits and other small animals will try to dig up your vegetables or eat them as they grow. You can build a structure for them that will keep them out of your garden. It doesn’t have to be big, just something that will keep them from digging up anything more than 1/2 inch deep in order to deter them.
Since your vegetables are high off the ground, there’s always the risk of birds trying to get at them as well. Use a net or some other type of barrier for your vegetables from these animals as well.

Making Your Vertical Vegetable Garden More Attractive
If your vegetable garden is built in an area that’s not easily seen, then you may want to consider a few additional steps to make it more attractive.
You can add color or scent to the soil itself with some tree bark or dried leaves. You can also place some plants in pots or just dried flowers around your vegetables.
You can also add skirting to the bottom of the garden in order to make it more decorative. The skirting can be made out of metal, plastic, or wood and can have paint or some other coating on it to make it more attractive.
If you’re looking for a way to cut your grocery bill and use much less space, you can start a vertical vegetable garden in your backyard. It’s one of the easiest gardening ideas to implement and you will be able to grow the freshest vegetables around in no time at all. By growing your own produce, you’ll also know that there isn’t much of an environmental impact since most of what you’re planting is grown indoors in containers.
